An advanced imaging flow including 40 Hz full-waveform inversion (FWI), in conjunction with an industry-supported ultra-high-density survey provides a high-resolution FWI velocity model and FWI Image to resolve complexities related to the Cenozoic sedimentary fill in the Delaware Basin. The more accurate of the near-surface velocity model improved the resolution of the image in the deeper reservoir level.
Structural distortions are frequently encountered in Abu Dhabi area with significant velocity heterogeneity and complex geological features. Due to the unique challenges, FWI often struggled to accurately resolve small-scale distortions. The hard seabed and ultra shallow water environments lead to significant noise that destabilize diving wave driven FWI. These challenges are further exacerbated by the lack of low-frequency signals. In this paper, we propose a workflow that incorporates MWI in the near surface and utilizes reflections and diving waves simultaneously with TLFWI to overcome the modelling challenges. The workflow enhances inversion stability and improves FWI convergence for deeper sections. The results highlight the enhancement on the continuity and focusing of migrated images in the area, effectively resolving structural distortions caused by complex karst formations and deeper channels.
The northern North Sea is a very active oil and gas exploration region, where several commercial discoveries have been made over recent years. The Late Jurassic sands are one of the major reservoir plays in the Northern Viking Graben. In recent years, the Late Jurassic Intra-Heather Formation sands (Sognefjord, Fensfjord formations and equivalents) have been re-explored over the Horda Platform. Wells targeting these sands have resulted in new discoveries such as Swisher and Blasto. We aim to demonstrate the extent to which new regional seismic data and sedimentary mapping are integral to understanding Late Jurassic reservoir distribution in a mature hydrocarbon basin.
